Voice is the next big platform
..according to some.
Speech recognition technology has come of age, not just over the phone or in a
car but now works in your average kitchen or indeed the pub.
It is still inevitably annoying until you've got used to using it[
Abuse: the darker side of HCI]. The reason is that we do more than pass
information when we use language. Us humans also use language to position
ourselves socially. Consider:
These all lead to the (potential) action of the addressee taking some cake, but
they also convey the speaker's notion of his or her position with
relation to the addressee -- interestingly
inversely to the standard conventions of politeness.
- Have some cake!
- Please have some cake.
- You may have some cake.
Although speech looks like a solved problem dialog development is still a black
art. The problem is so much of language use goes "seen but unnoticed" and
Prose Co has the techniques to notice the stuff that annoys us and to fix it.
